In some extreme cases, especially with prolonged exposure to very cold water, there is a risk of hypothermia (low body temperature), which can be dangerous. In dogs, sudden exposure to cold water can also cause a painful condition called Agile Tail, which is caused by muscle damage in the tail and makes it weak, limp, and painful.

The blood temperature of a pet is typically maintained within the following ranges: 100 to 102º F (38 to 39º C) for dogs, 99 to 101º F (37 to 38º C) for horses, and around 100º F (38º C) for cats.
In contrast, tap water temperatures can vary significantly depending on your location and the time of year. In most regions, tap water is delivered at a temperature of approximately 50 to 59º F (10 to 15ºC), which is considerably lower than your pet's core body temperature.
